This information-only pack reviews Australian registered teriparatide products, osteoporosis trial evidence, product-specific dosing context and safety limitations.
Safety and cautions
Safety statements are source-specific and should not be generalized across products, formulations or routes.
Australian legal status
At least one teriparatide product was listed as active on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods on 2026-10-28. Australian registration and indications are product-specific; the TGA assessment report is a dated evaluation and does not establish current stock or replace the current product information.
What the sources say
- The TGA assessment report for Terrosa describes a randomized comparative study in osteoporosis in which 20 micrograms of teriparatide was administered subcutaneously once daily for 52 weeks; lumbar-spine bone mineral density increased in both the biosimilar and reference-product groups, meeting the study's prespecified equivalence criterion. This biosimilar study was not designed to establish fracture reduction versus placebo. (Human clinical trials; TGA, Australian Public Assessment Report for Terrosa (teriparatide), final 2021-01-27., 2021-01-27)
- In a randomized trial of 1,637 postmenopausal women with prior vertebral fractures, daily teriparatide reduced new vertebral fractures over a median observation period of 21 months: 14% with placebo versus 5% and 4% in the 20- and 40-microgram groups. New nonvertebral fragility fractures occurred in 6% with placebo and 3% in each teriparatide group. These results apply to the studied high-risk population and trial regimens. (Human clinical trials; Neer RM et al., Effect of parathyroid hormone (1-34) on fractures and bone mineral density, New England Journal of Medicine (2001-05-10)., 2001-05-10)
- The ARTG lists TERIPARINTAS teriparatide solution for injection as a registered medicine with licence status A; its ARTG start date is 2025-10-01. This confirms registration of that specific product presentation as checked on 2026-10-28, not the current commercial availability of every teriparatide brand. (Educator material (not peer reviewed); TGA, ARTG entry 407485: TERIPARINTAS teriparatide solution for injection (active status checked 2026-10-28)., 2026-10-28)
- The TGA assessment report for Terrosa describes its approved product context as 20 micrograms once daily by subcutaneous injection in the thigh or abdomen, with a recommended lifetime treatment duration of 24 months. This is product-label context for registered teriparatide medicines and is not an individualized regimen. The cited Australian report describes a solution in a cartridge/pen; it does not provide a BAC-water reconstitution, cycling or microdosing protocol. (Educator material (not peer reviewed); TGA, Australian Public Assessment Report for Terrosa (teriparatide), final 2021-01-27., 2021-01-27)
- In the TGA-reviewed 52-week comparative study, adverse events were frequent in both groups; reported events included nausea, vomiting, injection-site erythema, dizziness, headache and presyncope. One mild hypercalcaemia case was reported in the Terrosa group. The TGA risk-management plan listed osteosarcoma as a potential risk, and the limited trial exposure cannot rule out rare or long-latency harms. (Educator material (not peer reviewed); TGA, Australian Public Assessment Report for Terrosa (teriparatide), final 2021-01-27., 2021-01-27)
